Keep Your Two Front Teeth and Give Me

It is Christmas…well…actually, it is Boxing Day, but close enough. Let me wish all of you the very, very best for the holiday season and may the coming year bring with it health and happiness for you and your families.

While I have spent a great deal of time over the past few days thinking about Christmas’ past, I have also spent some time thinking about what would be my ultimate Christmas present. While I came up with a number of them, I thought I would share a couple of them with you.

Here are three requests from my 2014 Christmas gift list for Santa:
  • Santa, please make some sense out of the cost of raw materials.
    • There was a time when I would build something just because the store-bought variety of what I wanted was just too damned expensive. Today, it is often cheaper to buy the finished product than it is the raw materials to build it. Why is it that the local box-store can sell a complete knockdown shelving unit for $39.95, while that same store sells the sheet of plywood I would need to build it myself for $47.00? WTF?
  • Santa, please equalize attempts to bring down selling prices.
    • I remember when a power tool was expensive. Today, you can buy a table saw for as little as $110.00, a power drill for slightly more than 20-bucks and a skill saw for $60.00. It used to be that power hand tools cost more than a week’s wages, yet today, we can buy them for less than 10% of our net paycheque. Back in 1968, I was making $2.24 an hour as an apprentice body man, which was a good salary back then. I worked part-time in my parents’ corner store and remember that we sold a quart of milk for 39¢, or roughly 17.5% of my hourly wage. Today, a quart of milk cost $3.29 (actually it is a liter, so it is slightly smaller) and the average hourly wage in Ontario is $15.00, so a quart of milk costs roughly 22% of the average persons hourly wage. It seems that the only corporations that focus on the volume/profit ratio are the ones producing discretionary items. WTF?
  • Santa, please get rid of box-stores.
    • Years ago, when I was living in London, Ontario, Canada, my old man would have a building project and our first stop was always at Copps Lumber. Copps was the box-store of yesteryear. They sold everything from tools to trim, all under one roof. We would walk up to the sales counter and go through the list with someone who was a trained carpenter by trade. He would check our calculations, suggest product options, and in the end, produce two copies of the bill; one for us and the other for the yardman. The old man would then back his station-wagon up to the loading dock, hand the next yardman who became available his copy of the bill, and within a short period of time, oversee the loading of the materials into the car. Today, we have the box-stores, places where you can wander around for hours just trying to find what you want, load it onto the gurneys yourself, haul it to the checkout line, wait to be checked out and then load it all yourself into your car that is usually parked as far away from the door as possible. This is progress? There are a few old lumberyards still around, the one I frequent in Toronto being Central Fairbanks Lumber. Ironically, they are located directly across the road from a Home Depot location. While their salesperson/customer ratio is slightly lower than what I remember of Copps, it can’t be compared to the ratio that exists across the road at Home Depot, which, I think, really doesn’t have one. The main difference, though, is in the order processing. I have spent a half-day putting an order together at Home Depot, which I later discovered could be done in less than an hour at Fairbanks. Given that Fairbanks sells that box-store $47.00 sheet of plywood I previously mentioned for $48.50, there is a cost for better service, but with large orders, there is a savings even when the higher material costs are added in. If you think about it, box-stores make you spend a great deal of time to do all their work and pay you less than minimum wage for doing it. WTF?

So there you go – some of what I want for Christmas 2014.

Peace,

Mitchell

In The Balance

” The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price has been forgotten.”  Benjamin Franklin

Well in case you haven’t heard, Veritas has released their new line of Bench Chisels. I first laid my eyes (and hands) on them back in 2011,  while visiting the Lee Valley Tools head office in Ottawa, Ontario. After a year of anticipation, I finally have a set that I’ve been putting through their paces and wanted to finally share my thoughts with you. I’ve read a few reviews and comments already on the inter-webs and thought I’d throw my two cents into the mix. This review may seem a little late but I wanted to actually work with these things for a while before giving any opinions.  I think that’s a pretty important step to take before spewing opinions around the internet, don’t you?

These things are FLAT.

The first thing you’ll notice when you pick up one of these chisels is the weight of them. For their size, they’re extremely light. A good thing in my book. The second thing you’ll notice is they’re balanced. Let me say that again, they’re really, really balanced! That point is probably the most important thing with any hand tool- how does it feel in hand? How does it feel while in use? These things simply put- feel great. From paring and chopping to fine tuning joinery, I find these chisels an absolute joy to use.
The standard set comes in O1 tool steel and that suites me just fine. I personally prefer O1 for it’s ease of sharpening. Some will argue that in laboratory tests, A2 steel will hold an edge longer. While that may be true, I don’t work in a laboratory! I’ve never found a noticeable difference in wear between the two except as mentioned, when it comes to sharpening. I prefer  O1 tool steel but if you often work with dense exotic timbers and need a tool that will hold up longer in the hardest woods, then  you’re in luck. Veritas will be producing these things in a ‘powdered-metallurgy steel known as PM-V11™ – a tough, wear-resistant alloy that retains its edge longer when used on dense, abrasive woods, yet sharpens as easily as A2 steel.
And speaking of the steel, the chisels come to you absolutely flat and when I say flat, I mean FLAT!
‘… flatness tolerance of ±0.0005″ (half of one thousandth of an inch!)
Half of one thousandth of an inch? Well then, that should do it, eh? In fact, these things are so flat they they’re actually a little sharp on the edges. If I could say anything negative about these chisels it would be just that. The outside edges should be ‘broken’ a little before use. Nothing more than a gentle rolling across a stone or a rub with some sand paper to ease the edges. Maybe this is something Veritas will address in the future? I asked about the sharp outside edges (or lands as they’re called in Galoot World) and was told it’s due to the extensive lapping process carried out during manufacturing to insure these things come to you absolutely flat. Fair enough.

Baked Maple...mmmm.

The handles are made from hard maple that goes through a high temperature, kiln-baking process that eliminates almost all moisture content and caramelizes the sugars in the wood. Oh how Canadian, chisels with maple syrup handles~;) But seriously, the handles feel great in use and that’s the important part. Aesthetically,  they look fantastic and I for one was happy to see a Veritas tool made from a Domestic wood species instead of their instantly recognizable, Bubinga handles and totes. They have small flats on the handle sides that feel great in hand. The blade to handle connection is an innovative cross between a tang and a socket-like ferrule. This makes for a perfect union between the two and you won’t have to worry about loose chisel handles anymore. Something I couldn’t say about ANY of my other chisels.
So, if you’ve been thinking about purchasing a new set of chisels and want something that will last a few lifetimes then I think it would be hard to beat the new chisels from Veritas. The full set of five is priced at just under $300. That is an extremely reasonable price to pay for a set of premium hand tools that will no doubt become extensions of your arms.
Already, they’ve become my go-to chisels and I think they were well worth the wait.
Cheers!

Size compared to some of my other chisels.

Custom Cornice for Draperies

Today I wanted to share the custom cornice for above our DIY Schumacher inspired draperies. Custom cornices can be super expensive, so DIY is definitely the way to go!

The window in our living room is pretty big, 60"x60", our finished cornice was 90" (to allow room for the draperies to sit without being in the window)  x 16"

First up, we were rush to finish it for the deadline, so I may be missing some information, so use this as a guideline :)

Ok, heres how we did it!

First we cut the notches into the 1x6 with the jigsaw (We ended up cutting one off because it looked a little heavy), and used wood glue and screws to attach it to the 1x12 (and clamps while it dried)

We wrapped it in batting.

To inexpensively cover the whole piece (without seams), we used a 70"x144" white tablecloth from Target, it was only $14 because it was an open box item. Thats a lot of fabric for $14!!

We then repeated with the fabric. To fully cover the seams from the batting we doubled up the fabric, which ended up being good for the corners. I dont have any more photos, because we were really rushed to finish! But I do want to mention how we handled the fabric on those tricky square steps. We cut the fabric at a 45 close to the edge. Having two layers of fabric allowed us to more cover the edges because there was more fabric to work from to cover the edges. This sounds a little confusing (honestly, I cant entirely remember how it worked because we were that rushed!) We then used the ribbon to cover any imperfections from the square steps. It was applied basically just like the greek key trimmed pillow shams by cutting the edges at a 45 and burning the ends and securing with heat n bond no sew adhesive.

We then installed it on the wall using corner brackets!

Ready to try it?

Price Breakdown and source list:

Wood: 1x12 ($10) and 1x6 (from our scrap pile)
Fabric: 70"x114" white table cloth from Target ($14 open box item, $20 regularly)
Ribbon: Free! Wrapped around throw blankets at Target around Christmas.
Heat n Bond no sew adhesive: already had

Total Cost: $24!

We had a good bit of supplies on hand, but if you were buying everything new, it would probably be about $30-$40, still pretty good!

Dont Trust Mortality

That one post that I made when I announced I was bowing out for the summer to tend to my tomatoes has really come back to bite me on the ass a few times since. Damn!

What I said at the time was, "Im going to do my impersonation of Vito Corleone and tend to my tomatoes, sans the heart attack, I hope." Kick my butt if you ever see Ive used a similar style of comment.

I started to have bouts of lightheadedness and dizziness a couple of months ago and immediately called the doctor and made an appointment to have a physical. The day before my appointment, it appears I passed out while I was out walking the dog. I just woke up flat on my back in the middle of the sidewalk with no idea how I got there. I got myself home and my wife immediately drove me to the closest emergency hospital.

As it turns out, the electrical controls in my heart have slowly been short circuiting over the past few months and as a result, my body has been considerably shortchanged when it comes to oxygen. When your oxygen content gets too low for things to work properly, things shut down. This isnt the most serious issue in the world of medicine, but I can tell you that one of its major downsides is the lack of warning. Scares the bejeebers out of you, I can assure you.

When I hit emergency, they immediately hooked me up to a ECG monitor and whisked me up to the Cardiac Care Unit. The next day they informed me they were going to install a pacemaker and that was that. Thirty hours after I arrived I had a new little friend tucked under my skin just below my left shoulder blade and that was that.

Oh, ya. The doctor also told me that I hit my head on the sidewalk when I passed out and it took four staples to close the gash. I dont believe her - not in the least. That crack in my skull was made by my mortality that had dropped by to introduce itself. To get my attention, the little bugger hauled off and kicked me in the head when I was already down. Im sure of it.

Peace,

Mitchell

catching up

ive been out of the writing thing for a bit here. ive been back playing some paddle tennis and pool in the evenings and things have picked up a bit in the office. aside from sending out drawings and estimates and shoveling snow, weve got a few new complex little new design projects were working on. plus, we received our approved finish sample last week and delivered the big island yesterday. tomorrow trevor and i will do the final onsite assembly. its nice to have our shop back after walking around a 16 object for a month or so ... it was a long way to the bandsaw for a long time ... click the photos to enlarge them ...
first coat of finish ...
as it says, before the seal coat
on site, but not assembled ..
i forgot the columns stuck out beyond the cornice and we had to take off the front door (twice), and a piece of weatherstripping to go straight out ... close one ..
back to normal ...
sams latest bench project
the client has added a shelf under the seat for books, etc. its a bedroom piece under the tv in the same room as the cylinder cabinets. (see the post below) ..
we started with a cross piece centered on every other rivet, but im guessing well fill them all in once the client checks it out tomorrow ...
and, my neighbor made an intriguing little sketch for some stools for her kitchen island ... she took one of our egypt legs and added some footrests ... if youve ever tried it, you know its not possible to go directly from a sketch to a real chair or stool without a full size mockup. (see below) ... how comfortable is that drawing? is it the right size?
well, our first shot wasnt ... too big ... the second one was just right
cool design and most comfortable if you sit across the seat as it makes the seat bigger without making the whole seat too big ... happy accident ..
and then, our friend mr. ruhlman sent us some inspiration from 1st dibs and france circa 1928 or so .... it looked sooooo simple in the picture ...
but wait, how do you fit that curved compound angled glued up veneered back piece to the rest of the thing ... cardboard helps, but patience and a good attitude is the sharpest tool in the box ... its coming ... more later when we get out the Edelman snakeskin leather. its going to be something ...
some fumed spessart quartersawn oak (never heard of it) from Talarico Lumber for an upcoming fancy phases of the moon bookcase project ... should be fun ..
and lastly, oh my aching back ... 2and a half feet or so of snow blown up against the house directly above the front entry ... it was easier to shovel it down than it would have been to shovel it up after it slides ... this was a once in eleven winter event ...
i only shoveled the half over the walk ... the far half slid off monday night ... one of the first days above freezing in 2011. all for now ... phew!

Build a Case for your Books with your Friends

Its Wood Whisperer Guild Build time again. Because Marc is currently dealing with a limited shop as his new one is built, the current build is a one or two sheet plywood bookcase. Its a useful project that makes great use of one of my favorite materials: man made sheet goods. Unlike my projects that often leave the sheet goods exposed, Marc will show you how to hide it and make a damn fine bookcase.
The One & Two Sheet Bookcase
Previously Ive talked about The Wood Whisperer Guild and why I feel its a must for any online woodworker. Now, you can watch me go on about the Guild, and why its such a great experience to build a project with fellow guild members. As you watch, Im the one who looks like a zombie.

Moulding Plane Shelves

Lately Ive been exploring yet another part of the slope - wooden moulding planes.

In the past, whenever I wanted to try my hand at making mouldings Ive used my trusty Multi-planes (hmm, multi multi planes...). Now I know that some people hate these things ("boat anchors"), but I found that using these was a fun adventure in gizmocity (especially the 55). Of course there was the usual learning curve and the ongoing series of adjustments each time a new profile was needed - and naturally the setup in the plane at hand is never the one you need now, but will be the one you need next. You get the picture. Which I suppose is how I ended up with three of these beasts in the first place...

"If only there was some way to have one plane for each profile! You wouldnt have to reset everything time and again! If only there were dedicated moulding planes...wait!"

Enter the wooden moulding plane. In reverse chronological order, I have discovered the joy of making mouldings with moulding planes (electric router, multi-plane, wooden moulding planes). And after an initial purchase of a great mixed set I was off and running. Earlier this summer it was Maine and New Hampshire and then Ebay. Soon they were everywhere and I had to build them their own shelves.

It was one of those "One Day" projects that took - well lets just say longer than one day. But it worked and I liked the way it looked. But soon it was full and time to build a second one. This time I really tried to get a handle on how long it would/should take me to complete. I outlined the steps involved (and actually predicted most of them) and estimated the time to complete each step. Then I kept track of how long it really took. I should probably mention here that I am infamous for my lack of "time reality" - so this was not as easy as it may sound to you time sensible folks. The results? Not bad. I predicted 9 hours and in reality it took 11 and some change. Im pretty happy with that, and if I ever have to do it again I am confident I could shave off another 2 hours by not repeating a few stupid mistakes (I actually took notes this time...).

Heres a picture of the work in progress. It is being held off the side of the bench for the planing of the dovetails. Just a simple jig really, but by far the best way I have figured out yet.

Here it is finished and ready to hang. You can see the decorative ovolo shape at the top of the sides - the first one had a cavetto design.

And here is a final shot of both shelves, looking rather empty now, in their corner of the shop.
